5 winter life hacks with a garment steamer

How to use a garment steamer in winter to remove pilling, refresh accessories, smooth outerwear without an iron, sanitize clothes and tidy up fur.

Removing pilling from coats and sweaters

  • Direct steam at the pills to soften the fibers.
  • Brush the fabric with a soft brush or wipe it with a terry towel — the pills will come away easily.
  • After steaming, gently fluff up the fabric with your hands.

Refreshing scarves, hats and gloves

  • Hang the item on a hanger or lay it out on a flat surface.
  • Go over it with hot steam, holding the steamer 10–15 cm away.
  • For a fresh scent, you can add a few drops of essential oil (such as lavender or mint) to the water tank.

Smoothing winter clothes without an iron

  • Hang your coat or puffer jacket on a hanger.
  • Steam from top to bottom, gently pulling the fabric taut with your other hand.
  • Give a puffer jacket a gentle shake to help the filling spread out.

Sanitizing without washing

  • Steam kills up to 99% of bacteria.
  • Treat scarves, hats and gloves after public transport, outerwear after walks in crowded places, as well as children's clothes and soft toys — all without chemicals.

Cleaning fur on hoods and collars

  • Gently run the steamer over the fur, holding it 15–20 cm away.
  • Shake the fur out with your hands or comb it with a soft-bristled brush — it will be fluffy again.
